My Arena Gear Setup

August 28th, 2008 Tuna Posted in World of Warcraft | 2 Comments »

My Arena Gear setup is somewhat different from what most Arena experts would expect. Instead of stacking Stamina and Resilience like a good little Mage, I opted for more quick and destructive approach. So far it has proven to work in 2v2 and 3v3 quite nicely.

At a quick glance, you would see I have Season 4 Robes, Season 3 Helm, and Shoulders. You would also notice a PvE Weapon hanging off the side of my body (Off Hand is hidden when unsheathed). You can’t really tell what kind of Gloves or Boots I’m sporting, but if you saw me in Arena, you would probably think I’m in good a mix of S3/S4 gear. Mostly likely over 11k Health, and over 450 Resilience.

If you take a closer look however, you would notice that the color of my Shoulders aren’t quite right, but fortunately for me, in Arena you don’t get a chance to take the time to examine your opponents when you meet in battle. Especially with an Ice Barrier surrounding my Mage.

Here is a look at my gear:

Got Honor Points Refunded but… Shh!

August 27th, 2008 Tuna Posted in World of Warcraft | 7 Comments »

Alright, so I farmed the 15300 honor to buy the [Guardian's Band of Subjugation] and ended up buying the wrong Ring. Then I put in a GM ticket, and later the next day, I got an in-game mail saying that they have taken away the [Vindicator's Band of Subjugation] and refunded 12000 Honor and 10 x [Alterac Vally Mark of Honor] for the Ring.

So I took the Honor and Tokens I got back, and CAREFULLY bought the correct Ring. Then I slapped on the Spellpower enchant on it. At that point I realized something. The GM or the specialist made a little mistake…

Week 8/19 - Recap

August 26th, 2008 Tuna Posted in Entertainment | 2 Comments »

World of Warcraft:

I didn’t get a chance to log on last night after my Ring ordeal, but I did receive an email from a GM stating that my [Vindicator's Band of Subjugation] has been removed, and they have refunded my the Honor Points and the 10 x [Alterac Valley Mark of Honor]. This time I will be more careful when I make my purchase.

Games:

I’ve been playing a new Tactical RPG now for the Xbox360 called Spectral Force 3. It had just been recently ported over from Japan, and is a very solid game (if you like tactical rpg games that is). The only downside for me that even though it has HD support, the graphics still look like it is a PS2 game. Other than that, I’ve been enjoying this game.

I still have been playing a lot of Final Fantasy Tactics A2 during the week. Since it is for the Nintendo DS though, I’m going to save my playing time for the upcoming trips I have planned.

Bought the Wrong @#%! Ring!

August 25th, 2008 Tuna Posted in World of Warcraft | 13 Comments »

As you may know, me and my 2v2 partner got over 1650 rating last week, but didn’t have enough Honor Points to purchase our Season 4 Rings. So we played it on the safe side and played 3v3 with one of our other friends for points this week, since we didn’t want to play our 2s team and risk dropping below 1650 (the rating requirement for the season 4 rings) before getting our Rings.

So it early Monday morning- way too early Monday morning, like 4-5 AM. I decided to farm the last 3-4k Honor Points to get my Ring, in case she got her Ring already too. That way, if we both have our Rings, we can just play our 2s team later tonight and get more points (potentially).

I picked up the daily PvP quest, and it was WSG. Sweet, I love WSG! I queued in and 5 seconds later I get the pop up. I join. Good, Pug versus Pug, from what I’ve experience, I got a 50% chance at winning this WSG. I look at all the classes on my side, 5 Mages, 1 Druid, 1 Rogue, 2 Priests, 1 Hunter. Awesome, this looks like it gonna be a fun fight!

When nobody barks any strategy in chat, that normally means, “everyone on offense, kill flag runner when we meet them on the way back”. So the battle starts, and it looks like Horde has decided to do the same thing. We get the flag and on the way back, we meet the Horde head on in the middle of the field. Then one of the most amazing and beautiful sight I’ve seen in PvP happened.

In almost perfect synchronization, the five Mages all popped their trinkets, Icy Veins and Summon their Water Elementals all at the same time. There were Frostbolts and Waterbolts flying in every direction, and Horde were frozen everywhere. During all this frosty chaos, Horde managed to lose all their healers, and then, eventually the flag.

This battle seemed to had destroyed the Horde’s fighting spirit. For the rest of the game, the five Mages were controlling the middle of the field, dismounting and killing any Horde that tries to make it across the field, while our Druid and healers were pretty much left free to grab the flag and run it back with ease. We won 3-0. “Job’s Done!”

Spicytuna 3.0 - Coming Soon!

August 22nd, 2008 Tuna Posted in Site Admin | 5 Comments »

I am currently working on a new layout for Spicytuna right now. So far it is looking good, and I am liking the way everything is going. I haven’t ran into any major problems yet, so hopefully that keeps up. Here is a glance at some of the changes I’m excited about:

One of things I like most about the new design is the “Featured” section, and the “Carousel” thingy underneath of it. I also like the location of where the most recent posts are. You don’t have to scroll through the sidebars to find the list anymore.

With the “Featured” section, I can sticky posts which I think are important or feel needs to be read. It could be newest WotLK news, new Guides, or just maybe the newest post. It also has the look that kind of screams out, “Read me!”.

The “Carousel” section underneath of that, I can set to display all posts under a specific category. As you can see in the picture, I have set it to display all Frost Mage Guides, and you can use the arrows on the left or right to scroll through all the Guides that I have available.

Arena Woes

August 21st, 2008 Tuna Posted in Gaming, PC, World of Warcraft | 8 Comments »

Finally, I was able to get back to Arena. For the past 3 weeks, either me or my partner were unable to be on at the same time to get our 10+ games in for points. So after weeks of packing, moving, going on trips, power outages, internet difficulties, and sickness, we are back! But we were rusty.

After not doing Arena for 3 straight weeks and coming back, it felt like a whole new game. We weren’t in sync, and we go into a fight not thinking on the same page. We would lose to class combos which we normally have no problems dealing with. I was making a lot of careless mistakes. I was letting Warriors get Charges off, Blinking at the wrong times, missing my Counterspells, etc.

Week 8/12 - Recap

August 19th, 2008 Tuna Posted in Anime, DS, Gaming, Movie, PC, World of Warcraft | 4 Comments »

World of Warcraft:

Big news for me, and I think it is worth mentioning again, M’uru / Entropius finally down! Working on Kil’jaeden now, and hopefully soon, I can say, “I beat the game!” again…

Video Games:

Final Fantasy IV: I reached the final dungeon and it has been kicking my butt. Looks like I reached it too fast and need to take some time and grind out some levels for my party. However, the thought of grinding out levels then prompted me to get a new game.

Final Fantasy Tactics A2: Yep another RPG, I just love them. I played Final Fantasy Tactics Advanced to death (99hr59min59sec) last year, and I can pretty much guarantee you that I will do the same on A2 also. The game starts off pretty much exactly the same way. Boy gets sucked into a book and appears in a fantasy world and tries to find his way home.

End Game Satisfaction

August 18th, 2008 Tuna Posted in Gaming, Life, PC, World of Warcraft | 16 Comments »

Cambios from Muckbeast made a few comments about end game satisfaction, and raiding in general. He does make some very good points, both here and in his blog. I know where he’s coming at and agree with some of his points to a certain degree.

Maybe because of his game design background, he is viewing this from a different angle from how I view things (have you ever watched a movie with a film major? not too fun). So I would like to give my view on how I see things, and have some counter points to some of his arguments.

“Think about that, and then ask yourself if it was really worth all the broken friendships, drama, anger, rage, arguments, etc. that it took to get to this point.”

I myself have not gone through any of this getting to this point. Maybe frustration on some bosses, but it never anything extreme. I know it has happened to quite a bit of players, but not all. You can’t just assume that all end game raiders go through all of this just to be successful with it. I am lucky enough to not have to go through all that.

There are a lot of people who put up with all of that, and still think it is worth all that trouble. I wouldn’t go through broken friendships myself, but drama, anger, rage, and arguments I can put up with to see all this end game content. Then there are players who don’t think it is worth it, and won’t pursue the end game content grind.

As a married person, do you think it was really worth all the broken friendships, drama, anger, rage, arguments, etc. that it took to get to that point (marriage)? I know this isn’t the best comparison, but it still shows that different people find things that are or are not worth fighting for. Some people will think such a relationship is not worth all the trouble, some who believe it is worth all the ups and downs, and there are those who are lucky enough to be able to make it through without running into any sorts of troubles.

“An hour of killing trash for the “reward” of a 10 minute, scripted boss battle is like suffering through a root canal for the reward of a prostate exam. Oh, and if something goes wrong in that boss battle, you very well might be clearing that same hour of trash to take another shot at it.”

The ONLY “end game” boss encounters which make you clear “hours of trash” after a boss wipe is in Mount Hyjal, where you have to clear eight waves of trash before each boss fight (which takes about 10 minutes by the way), so I’m not sure which bosses you are referring to. All other instances allow about an hour and half of boss attempts before the trash respawns.

If clearing trash is such a horrible experience to go through, then why are there so many people going on “trash runs” or deliberately wiping on Mount Hyjal bosses for the soul reason to redo the trash waves? That is because trash mobs drop very good loot, and provide a lot of rep for many players. Many guilds don’t kill specific bosses in the Black Temple so that they could return later and kill all the trash mobs over again.

In fact, there is so little trash in Sunwell, that many people wish there were more trash to clear. There is only two pulls between Kalecgos and Brutallus. None between Brutallus and Felmyst. Only two total mobs between M’uru and Kil’jaeden.

“People that get massively sucked into raiding fulfill this need through raid success. As a result, they often have less of a drive to work on their family, friends, children, spouse, job, or school. So the actually important things in their real life suffer because this crucial need is being satisfied through MMO raiding.”

Yes there have been many stories of people who have been too absorbed into the game that it has affect other aspects of their lives. This isn’t just raiding, the entire game is addicting. Ultimately, it is the player who has to do something about this. It’s not Blizzard’s fault they designed a good game.

The player has to be the one to manage their own time and set their own priorities. Monique of Girls Don’t Game has written a very good article on this from her very own personal experience.

I personally raid 3 nights a week in a guild that has progressed steadily through Sunwell and is currently on the last boss of The Burning Crusade. There are many guilds out there who raid 4 to 5 days a week, even 7 days a week. That would be way to much for me. I know where my own limit is, and everyone should figure out their own limit.

“I play games to PLAY THE ACTUAL GAME. I don’t play games to load up a web site and read a step by step strategy for how to defeat a boss. Sure, you don’t have to use raid walkthroughs, but you have to be masochistic not to. Raid encounters are generally designed to require an extremely specific set of maneuvers in order to defeat them.”

These boss guides are there to help you and provide tips for you to take down specific bosses. They give you a heads up on what abilities the boss does, and offer suggestions on how to deal with them. Things you will learn after one or two attempts on a boss anyways, so it just to save you some time and attempts. Sure you don’t have to read boss strategy, but it helps.

Knowing how to beat a boss doesn’t mean the boss will automatically be beaten. If it were so, then every guild would have Kil’jaeden down by now. It still requires a lot of attempts and practice in order to kill the boss. Just because you read up and watched videos on how to ride a bike, or how to swim, doesn’t mean you can start cycling and swimming like you were Lance Armstrong or Micheal Phelps.

“I also hate the way raiding turns people into such a tiny fraction of what their character can and should be. Most characters end up using 2 or 3 abilities 90% of the time, and in the same exact order over and over again. That gets incredibly boring.”

This doesn’t just apply to raiding, this applies to all aspects of the game. If you are leveling, raiding, doing 5 man instances, or even PvPing, you will spam the same few abilities over and over again depending on class and spec. So if you find that incredibly boring, then you are playing the wrong game.

In fact, I use more of my Mage’s ability in raids than in any other aspect of the game. There are spells I use in raids that I have never used while farming, leveling, or PvPing. That is just the Mage class though. If you are looking at Healing classes, of course they can’t heal a mob to death while farming, but in PvP, they do the same thing they do in raids, keep other people alive.

Kil’jaeden: Final Boss of the Burning Crusade

August 15th, 2008 Tuna Posted in Gaming, PC, World of Warcraft | 7 Comments »

Kil’jaeden the Deceiver, is the sixth and final boss of the Sunwell Plateau, and as well as the final boss of this expansion, The Burning Crusade. He is the Supreme Commander of the Burning Legion, and is also known as the creator of the Lich King.

Kil’jaeden

The encounter is definitely a fun fight. The M’uru/Entropius fight was really a good test and great preparation for the final battle with the Deceiver. The fight is a combination of a lot of boss encounters. It is like Magtheridon, Curator, Void Reaver, Razorgore the Untamed, Teron Gorefiend, and Hex Lord Malacrass, all put together into one fight.

The fight is also a lore extensive fight, much like the Illidan fight with Akama and Maiev Shadowsong. I suggest reading up on Anveena and Kalecgos to learn more about the whole Sunwell Plateau instance.

Spoiler Alert! The rest of the post will go through the phases of the fight, which will include some spoilers to the Sunwell story. I have also included a video of the first 3 Phases of the fight, so if you do not wish to know how the fight goes, or know how the fight ends, you might not want to continue.

WotLK Beta: Mirror Image

August 14th, 2008 Tuna Posted in Gaming, PC, World of Warcraft | 7 Comments »

The WotLK Beta has changed builds once again, and is currently at Build 8788. There were only two changes to the talents this time. A change to Torment the Weak and a change to Fingers of Frost. The biggest chance however is a brand new spell to replace our Shatter Shield spell, which was replaced by a Frost Talent.

For the new Mage spell, Blizzard pulls one out of the pages of Naruto’s techniques, and gives us Shadow Clones. The new spell for Mages at level 80 is now, Mirror Image!

Kage Bunshin no Jutsu!

I am not sure if these images will mimic whatever you do, or do their own thing. Doesn’t say if they will actually do damage or just a percentage of damage, or none at all. If this is meant to be a spell which creates decoys for you, does this cause enemies to de-target you when you cast it like Feign Death? There is still a lot of unknowns about this spell, so hopefully we learn more about it soon.

The Spirit of Competition

August 14th, 2008 Tuna Posted in Gaming, PC, World of Warcraft | 2 Comments »

With the 2008 Summer Olympics in full bloom, we watch and show our support to the athletes in Beijing who are representing our country. Of course, Blizzard has their own way of showing their support to the Olympics. They did so with “The Spirit of the Competition” event.

Go Team USA!

Not everyone is excited about the Olympics, but I have been following them whenever I have a chance. It even distracted me a bit during the Sunwell Plateau raid the other night. I am also convinced that Michael Phelps is a Druid with Aquatic Form.

M’uru: The Dark Naaru

August 13th, 2008 Tuna Posted in Gaming, PC, World of Warcraft | 4 Comments »

M’uru is finally dead! After a little over two months of wiping over and over again, we finally got the Dark Naaru down. Even after the nerf to M’uru in the last patch, he still gave us all sorts of trouble, and was a pain in the butt to attempt.

M’uru is definitely a very difficult fight. The group composition had to be perfect, and everyone must on their game, and no mistakes can be made. Like many guilds have already said about M’uru, Blizzard has done a great job with creating this encounter.

It really pushes your raid to the limit, and when you finally kill him, you get this great feeling of taking down what many people say is the hardest boss so far in the game.

In Phase 1, you fight M’uru and his waves of adds. You need to DPS him down while at the same time deal with waves of Bloodelves which run in from two sides. There are also Voidwalkers which come out of portals which randomly appear in the room. When the Voidwalkers die, it spawns about ten Voidspawns, which need to be AoE’d down. While all this is going on, these skulls also spawn in the center of the room, which needs to be Mass Dispelled right away or they will wipe the raid.

Phase 2 starts when you get M’uru down to 0%. M’uru dies and Entropius is born. At this time, no more waves of mobs will come, but you must kill any remaining mobs that were up when M’uru is still alive. Entropius does a raid-wide shadow beam, which increases in damage the longer he is up. The raid must be able to take him out before the damage gets too high for the raid to heal through.

Loot Time! We have now already killed M’uru/Entropius twice now, so I guess you can say we now have him on farm. We actually wiped more times on Felmyst then we did on M’uru this week. Here is a list of what we got so far.

Week 8/5 - Recap

August 12th, 2008 Tuna Posted in Gaming, Life, PC, World of Warcraft, Xbox360 | No Comments »

World of Warcraft:

Do you find yourself at level 70 with nothing to do anymore? Even with end game raiding, I find myself with nothing to do on non-raid days. Normally I would farm for mats to prepare for the next raid, but I already have enough flasks, oils, foods, potions to last like three months. So what do I do now to keep myself busy? I gave myself a reason to start doing dailies again.

Now I have a Chocobo for ground and air!

I bought ["Gigantique" Bag] x 4, and a [Cenarion War Hippogryph]. It was either the mount, or drop 1k gold on that new title from the Isle of Quel’Danas. So the bags were 1200g each, and the mount was 1600g. I think my next goal is to replace all my 20 slot bags in my bank (all seven) with the expensive Haris Pilton ones. After that, then I will get the title.

Video Games:

I’ve been playing FFIV still and am coming close to beating it. I just landed on the moon and am currently making my way towards that crystal castle looking thing. Incoming new party member!

WotLK: Build 8770 - Instant Cast Deep Freeze

August 11th, 2008 Tuna Posted in Gaming, PC, World of Warcraft | 2 Comments »

I come back from my small trip and already there is some more tweaks to the Mage class in WotLK. The new WotLK Beta Build 8770 is out, and they were posted again by MMO-Champion.com a couple days ago, so it may be old news to you. If you haven’t taken a look at it yet, here they are, and my thoughts on the new changes.

Arcane

  • Arcane Shielding (Tier 4) now decreases the mana lost per point of damage taken when Mana Shield is active by 17/33%. (Previously was 10/20%)
  • Improved Counterspell (Tier 4) now has a 100% chance to silence the target for 2/4 secs. (Previously was a 50/100% chance to silence the target for 4 secs.)
  • Torment the Weak (Tier 4) is a new 3 point talent. It increases damage done to slowed targets by 2/4/6%.
  • Incanter’s Absorption moved to Tier 7.
  • Spell Power moved to Tier 10.

Fire

  • Impact (Tier 3) has been changed to give your damaging spells a 4/7/10% chance to stun the target for 2 secs. (Previously was a 5 point talent 2/4/6/8/10% and only worked on fire spells)
  • Molten Shields (Tier 4) now includes both Fire Ward and Frost Ward, and now increases chance to reflect the incoming spell by 15/30%. (Previously only worked on Fire Ward and was 10/20%)
  • Fiery Payback (Tier 8 ) changed to include all damage, and now increases the cooldown of pyroblast by 2.5/5 secs when below 35% health. (Previously only worked on physical and fire damage, and did not increase cooldown time)
  • Firestarter (Tier 9) is now a 2 point talent and was changed to 50/100% chance to make your next Flamestrike instant cast. (Previously was 15/30/45% and a 3 point talent)
  • Burnout (Tier 10) has been increased to 10/20/30/40/50% critical damage bonus to all fire spells. (Previously 5/10/15/20/25%)
  • Living Bomb (Tier 11) has been completely changed and now the target becomes a Living Bomb, taking 612 Fire damage over 12 seconds.  After 12 seconds or when the spell is dispelled, the target explodes dealing 306 Fire damage to all enemies within 10 yards and knocking all targets up in the air.  This spell can only affect one target at a time.

Frost

  • Frost Warding (Tier 1) has been changed and now increases the armor and resistances given by your Frost Armor and Ice Armor spells by 25/50%.  In addition, gives your Frost Ward and Fire Ward a 15/30% chance to negate the warded damage spell and restore mana equal to the damage caused. (Previously was 15/30% increase to resistances)
  • Improved Frost Nova (Tier 2) has been replaced with Ice Floes (Was Tier 6) and reduces the cooldown of your Frost Nova, Cone of Cold, Ice Block and Icy Veins spells by 7/14/20%.
  • Arctic Reach (Tier 4) now includes the spell Deep Freeze.
  • Frost Channeling (Tier 4) now reduces the mana cost of all spells by 4/7/10%. (Previously only affected frost spells and was 5/10/15%)
  • Cold as Ice (Tier 6) is a 2 point talent and replaces Ice Floes. It reduces the cooldown of your Cold Snap, Ice Barrier, Deep Freeze and Summon Water Elemental spells by 10/20%. Requires Cold Snap.
  • Winter’s Chill (Tier 6) is now a 3 point talent and gives your frost spells a 33/66/100% chance to apply the winter’s chill effect. increases the chance Arcane, Fire and Frost spells will critically hit the target by 2% for 15 seconds. Stacks up to 5 times.
  • Shattered Barrier (Tier 7) now gives your Ice Barrier spell a 50/100% chance to freeze all enemies within 10 yds for 8 seconds when it is destroyed. Requires Ice Barrier.
  • Empowered Frostbolt (Tier 8 ) changed to a 2 point talent and now increases the damage of your Frostbolt spell by an amount equal to 5/10% of your spell power and increases the critical strike chance by an additional 2/4%.
  • Fingers of Frost (Tier 8 ) now works on 2 frost spells. (Previously only affected the first one)
  • Improved Water Elemental (Tier 9) changed to restore mana to all party or raid members an amount equal to 1/2/3% of their total mana every 5 secs. (Previously health was restored)
  • Deep Freeze (Tier 11) is now Instant Cast. (Previously had a 1.5sec cast time)

Again there is also an upgraded version of the Mage Talent Tree here. It is up to date with the current WotLK 8770 Beta Build.

The WoWWebStats (WWS) Report are in from the Tuesday night’s Sunwell Plateau raid, and I was able to break 2200 DPS this time on Brutallus. This further proves that Frost isn’t just for control. We can DPS too! /flex epeen

After breaking 2000 DPS from before, I have always been hovering a little over 2000 and under 2200 DPS. This time I was finally able to break another DPS barrier. Could it be a result from obtaining the Shredder Helm? Possibly.

Brutallus is one of the main reasons why I look forward to every week. Not only because he has the [Leggings of Calamity], (which happens to be the biggest upgrade for me in Sunwell) but also because he is a fun fight for us DPSers.

All DPSers have a competitive nature, and this fight gives us a chance to let us see how much DPS we can output, and at the same time, let us compete against the other DPSers in the raid.

Now this it isn’t the “best” test of DPS, but it is one of the better fights where you can go “all out” without worrying about aggro. Plus there are other factors too that could make it unfair for some players.

Group composition is the biggest one. For all the DPS casters, we all got a Shadow Priest, and a Shaman. However, one of the Shamans is Elemental, which provides an extra +3% Spell Hit and Spell Crit. Last week the Warlocks got the Elemental Shaman, this week, it was the Mages’ turn.

Another factor is Burn. This week, only one of the DPS casters got the debuff (first time I didn’t get the debuff). Getting the Burn debuff meant that you would have to stop whatever you were doing, and run your little behind over to the “safe spot”, killing your DPS at the same time. Or you could Ice Block if you were a Mage, and only take a small hit to your DPS.

Water Elemental Receiving Mage’s Spell Hit?

August 6th, 2008 Tuna Posted in Gaming, PC, World of Warcraft | 2 Comments »

There has been a Blue Post on the WoW WotLK Beta Forums which states:

“We plan to give all pets the master’s +hit%.” [source]

Now this was posted in the Warlock’s Forum, so we aren’t too sure if this was aim specifically towards Warlocks, or to all classes with a pet. If so, not only is this a huge buff to Warlocks, but to Hunters and Frost Mages too.

BRK has gone over how it would help out Hunters, let’s see how much it would help out us Frost Mages.

As of right now, your Water Elemental receives no Spell Hit bonus from you, but will receive any party auras or totems from your group. Which means the Water Elemental has an 17% chance to have his spells resisted. With an Elemental Shaman, it is cut down to a 13% chance to resist. That is a huge amount of DPS loss. Here is a screenshot of a WWS parse from awhile ago:

As you can see, without any Spell Hit bonuses given to your Water Elemental, he will have a good amount of his Waterbolts resisted. As a result, will lose a huge chunk of potential damage. Here is a more recent WWS, this time with an Elemental Shaman:
